چکیده

This study will consider the semantic behavior of the temporal negators not yet and never in English. In this paper, I show that not yet, by default, uses the stereotypical intervals connected with certain events to determine the time span of its negation, while never systematically ignores these stereotypical intervals. I show that in order to correctly distinguish between these two lexical items, it will be necessary to use Discourse Representation Structures in conjunction with a Semantic Framelinked denotation for not yet.

Temporal adverbials, negation and finiteness in Dutch as a second language: A scope-based account

This study investigates the acquisition of post-verbal (temporal) adverbials and post-verbal negation in L2 Dutch. It is based on previous findings for L2 French that post-verbal negation poses less of a problem for L2 learners than postverbal adverbial placement (Hawkins et al. 1993; Herschensohn 1998). The current data show that, at first sight, Moroccan and Turkish learners of Dutch also hav...

Interpreting Temporal Adverbials

We take for granted that sentences describe situations [2, 12]. One of the most important properties of situations are then their temporal locations, which are indicated by tense and aspect and temporal adverbials in the surface form. In [10, 22], we offered a formal theory for English tense and aspect and an algorithm that computes the temporal relationships between the situations implicitly i...

A data-driven study of temporal adverbials as discourse segmentation markers

Many linguistic and psycholinguistic studies present sentence-initial temporal adverbials as “good” markers of discourse segmentation. This paper proposes a corpus-based evaluation of their potential to signal discontinuity such as a discourse break or shift. We look in particular at how temporal adverbials interact with other features, such as position in the text (in relation to document stru...

Toward a Representation of Time to Process Temporal Location Adverbials

This paper describes a method to represent temporal lo-calization in such a way that it could be used in a system for natural language processing. We show that linguistic information is not suucient to deal with temporal lo-calization adverbials in natural language processing. A representation of time with a greater level of abstraction must be used. We propose an implementation of such a repre...

Aspect Selectors, Scales and Contextual Operators: An Analysis of by Temporal Adjuncts

Many temporal adjuncts select for specific aspectual classes; these adjuncts include measure adverbials like for an hour and interval adverbials like in an hour. While such adjuncts have traditionally served as diagnostics of telicity, it is only relatively recently that aspectual theorists have elucidated the relationship between the scalar-semantic meanings of these adjuncts and the internal ...
